We live on Princeton near Smith...Twice in the last month a man of average
height and build with black hair and a goatee has rang our doorbell at NIGHT
and used a story about "doing yard work for a neighbor,' having a "broken
down truck" and "needing to use the phone." The first time I listened to his
story and then told him, "no" and the second time I opened the door and
told him to leave immediately. I followed him down Smith and watched
him walk toward Yale, no vehicle in sight.
Be extremely wary of people casing our houses...and looking for
opportunities to find women alone.

Along with Mike's suggestions I'd like to see more signs near the golf course and little speed rumble
strips. I've noticed that from Gibson North on Girard it is down hill and leads to higher speeds.
Also an urgency to get to Gibson on Girard may be an issue. Should we contact Heinrich to this
effect?
Gracias
Thanks for asking for my input.
The city's traffic engineering did a "study" for signs. I was
recommending additional speed limit signs. But they say signage is
adequate. I disagree and think that adding some more speed limit signs
along with "speed checked by radar" signs would help, a little.
I spoke with city councilor Heinrich about three weeks ago and he said
he would have their traffic engineer do a study and then get back to me
in two weeks. I haven't heard back from his office yet. We did talk
about adding North and South bound bike lanes to give the psychological
appearance of a narrower road as well as speed humps or round-abouts.
The addition of designated bike lanes would also provide some extra
safety for the large number of cyclists that do use Girard. I have
noticed a growing number of professional cyclists training around this
area and it would seem congruent with the new Velodrome in this
neighborhood as well as to help encourage the over all health of our
city both physically and mentally.
And last but not least, photo enforcement along with increased "radar
opps", as much as I hate the Orwellian concept of Big Brother. I believe
that in time that this would be the best overall fix.
I do not feel that the overall problem has changed what so ever. And the
4 tact plans have been exactly as Sandy said they would be, a Band-Aid
not a fix.
Thanks Again! And please keep me posted about the neighborhood clean up
day.

I'm concerned about traffic sign age and speeding. On Girard Blvd heading south the 20 mph
sign for the intersection of San Joaquin and Girard is damaged and illegible. It needs to be
replaced. I think there also needs to be a "Reduced Speed Ahead" sign on Girard for drivers heading
north from Gibson approaching Kathryn. The speed shifts from 30 mph near Gibson down to 20 mph in the
curve in the road by San Joaquin. This is a busy intersection for pedestrians, dog walkers and
children at play and speeding is a real problem.
We have also experienced severe flooding twice due to the lack of adequate drainage on the north end
of the golf course. While Mayor Chávez has promised something would be done. Nothing has happened.
With the addition of apartments on Kathryn and Yale the capacity of the drainage system is now even
more compromised. Please help us get the storm and drainage system upgraded to prevent flooding in
the future!
Thank you!

Constant speeding on North and South bound Girard Blvd SE on and around the 1600
block. I have called police and they ran radar only one day. That day he gave 46 traffic citations,
all but one were for speeding the other a stop sign violation. The average speed was 45mph in this 30
mph zone. This radar was in the morning and I was told that most of the speeders were students.
Another major violator are the cab companies. I have called Checker Cab with a cab number and was
told by the supervisor that each driver is an independent contractor and they have no control over
them and that it would be best to call police.
I spoken to the city traffic planning and was told that Girard is an Arterial street so no Speed
Humps, Round abouts or added stop signs. Someone is going to get killed pulling out of there drive
going to get groceries.
Only the power of a neighborhood association can help make a difference..
Please pass this along to the proper Neighborhood and Police Departments

May 10, 20 sheets of drywall were stolen from a jobsite at 1024 Yale SE over the weekend.
Thu May 4 01:56:22 2006 Thanks for update. One of neighbors in the 1100
block of Princeton reported to me that on two occasions she came home to find her back door
unlocked. Nothing was missing at a glance. her husband states he knew he locked the door.
Upon arriving home the next day she found the back door unlocked again. Assured she had locked
the door especially due to what had just happened, husband and her are feeling violated. Also,
reported was criminal activity and Princeton Santa Clara a week ago last Sunday. Apparently
cops intervened, two men took off south toward San Rafael but police were there waiting for
them. They were taken away and were found with guns on them. Diane

Two car stereos were also stolen on Ross yesterday in broad daylight at 4:45 p.m. There were
eye witnesses who saw two Chicano males (approx. 30 years old, both bald, one with goatee and
one with mustache). They were driving a red two door Cavalier. Apparently the license plate
was swapped out but police are looking for them. Tani

There has been a recent surge of car break-ins on my street (San Rafael) and other streets in
the area. My tools were stolen out of my car (they were under my seat). Fortunately my window
was open, because 3 other cars had their windows broken. A week later, my car was broken into
again, but I had nothing in it the 2nd time, since they stole everything the first time.
Also, over in the Kathryn area, a friend of mine caught two men trying to break-in to his
house. His car also had been broken into several times, stealing his radio and tools.

March 2006 Sunday?, a
black man, looking like his was dressed (sort of) like a policeman, stopped and kept
ringing the doorbell. This was in the evening and apparently they were the only ones
with a porch light on. They answered the door and he asked for directions to wellesley. Girard & San Joaquín.
Young white man intoxicated or hi looking to steal on Vassar near Hyder.
Had mowed and raked the apartments the day before.

I live on the 500 block on Vassar Dr SE. I wanted to report that we were burglarized
Friday, February 24th. The back door was forced open with a crow bar, a standard form
of entry for recent burglaries in the area we were told. Electronics were taken, the
rest of the house was not disturbed. It appears that gloves were worn, no finger prints
were present.

Just wanted to give you all a "heads up" on a "person of interest" in the neighborhood.
I first noticed the gentleman a few weeks ago as he walked past on Girard & San Rafael as I was
pulling weeds. I said "Hi" and he somewhat reluctantly returned the greeting. At the
time I thought, "must be a new neighbor in the area."
Several hours later I was driving up Girard and noticed him in the driveway of a house a
few south of Garfield. Just as I drove past he bent over and picked up the newspaper in
the driveway. I thought, "so that's where he lives." As I continued driving up Girard I
noticed in my rearview mirror that he was continuing to walk up Girard (newspaper in
hand). At this point I realized he had stolen the paper out of the driveway as he was
strolling by. Unfortunately I had my children as well as a friend of theirs in the car
and decided not to confront him.
I mentioned this incident to Mary at the time. Yesterday she saw the same guy walking up
Girard and said "hi." She says he seemed quite friendly at the time. As he continued
walking past she noticed he had a newspaper in his hand. She asked if it was his, or
where he had gotten it from. She says that he started yelling and screaming obscenities,
continued walking a few paces and then screamed some more. He kept this up until he had
rounded the corner.
(Our newspaper has been missing a few mornings over the past few months.)
I also had mentioned this guy to Gina shortly after the first observation. By my
description she feels it is likely that he is the same individual who made her nervous a
few weeks ago. He was standing across Girard (approximately at the library) and watching
her and her daughter getting out of the car, and unloading things.
My feeling is that this is a guy who is using Girard as a travel corridor, and not above
taking advantage of "crimes of opportunity" (perhaps our stolen car).
He is African-American 25-35 years old, medium height, stocky build, with short hair. He
does not "appear" to be homeless. In other words his appearance is clean. The day I saw
him take the newspaper he was wearing a sports Jersey (red and black, football jersey, I
think).
I know this is not the most useful description, but wanted to do what I could to give you
all (especially folks on Girard) a "heads up."

There was a kidnapping and sexual assault at Garfield and Harvard
featured on the news. The perpetrator was on parole and living in the
neighborhood. Perhaps, we should examine the state website again and check our
crime stats.
