VHNA MEETING FEBRUARY 22, 2006

**City clean up date April 29 th: City will provide trash bins and plastic bags do you want to get together and clean up our neighborhood. Please RSVP

Councilor Heinrich speaks to traffic issues and is asking for a moratorium on residential permits on commercial zoned lands. Information from a survey of 300 homes was completed, resulting in $50,000 being set aside by Councilor Heinrich for a traffic survey of our area.

Liquor sale enforcement: *It is illegal to sell liquor miniatures within 500 ft of a neighborhood. Thus, especially 7-11 is in violation of this law if they are selling them and they are going to be held responsible for any sales. Apparently the miniatures are a real issue for increased drunkenness.

New APD SE station changes: Captain Rob Debuck and 2 nd in command John Gallegos. Persons are impressed by the experience they bring to our area and some of the ideas they have. Board President Steve Schroeder attended Federation of University Neighborhoods and spoke to concerns of crime and traffic in our neighborhood.

AREAS OF CONCERN: Victory Hills NA is becoming the 5 th largest crime area in the city. Variables include one mile distance from Central, home ownership below 50% (actually 42%), rising crime rates, rising traffic, motels/hotels, and gang activity. Inability to get crime stats for area, specifically Dickerson SE. City attorney can’t get crime stats.

RECYCLING The city will now pick up all plastic items. A glass recycling bin is to be set up at Linda Loma Community Center.

AREA PROJECTS: A hotel and parking garage near football stadium. Possible skateboard park at Loma Linda CC. Veladrome where UNM tennis courts are. Expansion of technology park at University & César Chávez. UNM student parking increases due to Architecture School being built on parking facility.

TWO SETS OF HOUSING UNITS requesting permits: 4 plex housing (next to Doc Bolten’s) 36 apartments - Persons have difference of opinions concerning section 8 building. Other complex at 1208 Yale request 36 units. That land owner owns 16 of 96 Dickerson apartments. Difference of opinions on section 8 housing. VHNA should push for home ownership rather than apartments.

PLAN FOR DEVELOPMENT: PROMOTE BUSINESSES ON YALE BETWEEN GIBSON AND CENTRAL. A bakery would be nice.

MESA DEL SOL development will begin soon and may have traffic impact on area.

SECTOR PLAN for the area would be one way to plan growth commercially and to attack problems with traffic, mixed use, and neighborhood quality of life.

TRAFFIC CONTROL STUDY NEEDED!

Increased crime is a direct link to increased crime. VHNA has both happening concurrently.

2 to 3 X more money goes to building roads and infrastructure than to transportation and traffic solutions.

NEIGHBORHOOD STREET PARKING PLAN:

If you park your car on the street and live north of Santa Clara, park your car on the east side of the street or the south side of the street. If you live south of Santa Clara park your car on the west side or the north side.

Burglary escape routes often include damage to cars such as windows being bashed in. Try not to put your car in harms way.

OTHER ISSUES Bandelier Elementary School is doing great while Lowell Elementary is struggling.

Coalition 6 Meeting was attended by Juan Larrañaga. New commander voices commitment to help.

Jason Marks PRC

Vouchers Re: vouchers for thermostats etc. Vouchers from PNM for home heating improvements. Look for them in bill.

Email councilor Heinrich at mheinrich@.gov any concerns about Hyder Park or about any park issues.

Board member Feroza Jussawalla attended SENA meeting on new requests for 5 story buildings around Nob Hill Most were opposed.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT was briefly discussed in reference to whether or not to try and get several neighborhoods together and plan activities to be held at Loma Linda or continue to keep it the way it’s been done before. Board Member Juan Larrañaga will head up the efforts for this year. (with support)
